Kolkata Knight Riders will need the spin duo of Sunil Narine and Varun Chakravarthy to get going against Rajasthan Royals at Brabourne Stadium on Monday, according to former South Africa captain Graeme Smith.

The off-spin and mystery spin combinations of Narine and Chakravarty have been essential in Kolkata’s success, suffocating the opposition’s batters and slowing the run-flow.

However, in IPL 2022, the combo has yet to light up the stage. Chakravarthy hasn’t been at his best, picking four wickets at a high average of 47.75 and an economy rate of 8.30. While Narine has four wickets at an average of 30 and an economy rate of just five, Chakravarthy hasn’t been at his best, picking four wickets at an average of 30 and an economy rate of just five.

With the second half of the IPL 2022 approaching, Kolkata is hopeful that Narine and Chakravarthy will rediscover their best form.

Both Kolkata and Rajasthan have struggled in the tournament’s death overs, making the final five overs with the ball a concern for the teams led by Shreyas Iyer and Sanju Samson, respectively. In the IPL 2022, Kolkata has the third-worst economy rate for teams at death overs (12.97), while Rajasthan has the fourth-worst economy rate (12.78).

In light of the death bowling worries, Smith believes that Narine and Chakravarthy’s positions in the middle overs for Kolkata become even more important. That’s why we’re discussing spin choices. Is it possible for a Narine or a Chakravarthy to pick up one or two wickets in the midst of the innings and relieve the load in the death overs? With Russell, Cummins, Narine, and Umesh Yadav, they have enough experience. The KKR team should have more control heading into the last overs.

Smith concluded by adding that he is more concerned about Rajasthan’s death overs bowling because of the scarcity of experienced bowlers in that phase. The Royals, on the other hand, lack that experience, which concerns me. That might be the difference between the two sides in this game.
