Lata Mangeshkar’s name was missing from the Grammys’ In Memoriam segment on Monday, which saddened Indian fans.

In February, Mangeshkar, one of India’s most popular and prolific singers, died in Mumbai.

She was dubbed the “Bollywood Nightingale” since she sang thousands of songs in over 30 languages.

She was honoured at the British Academy Film and Television Awards (BAFTA) In Memoriam segment earlier this month.

However, she was left out of the segment honouring artists who died in the previous year at both the Oscars and the Grammys this week.

The Grammys, which bill themselves as “music’s biggest night,” was especially enraged by the omission.

This year’s Grammys honoured musical theatre maestro Stephen Sondheim, Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins, designer Virgil Abloh, and actress Betty Davis, among others.

However, Mangeshkar wasn’t the only well-known figure that was absent. Fans criticised the lack of Indian music artist Bappi Lahiri, Grammy-winning producer Phil Schapp, and Slipknot’s Joey Jordison, all of whom died in February.

Fans were also surprised to see Mangeshkar, Lahiri, and Bollywood star Dilip Kumar missing from the honours at the Oscars.

Indian actors Irrfan Khan, Rishi Kapoor, Sushant Singh Rajput, and costume designer Bhanu Athaiya were honoured at the Oscars in 2021.

Mangeshkar’s death elicited tributes from millions of admirers around the world just weeks after she was hospitalised at a hospital after testing positive for COVID-19.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said her death has left a “vacuum in our nation that cannot be filled.”

The classically educated performer rose to fame in Bollywood as a “playback vocalist,” giving voice to the industry’s lip-synching movie stars, for more than half a century.

For decades, she was the most sought-after vocalist in the country, with every prominent actress requesting that she perform their songs.

She was given the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian honour, in 2001.

When she turned 75 in 2004, Yash Chopra, one of Bollywood’s biggest directors, stated that he experienced “God’s blessings in her voice.”
