The US Food and Drug Administration(FDU) has issued a safety communication regarding the known side effects of malaria drug hydroxychloroquine and chloroquine suggested by President Donald Trump for treating coronavirus.
According to FDU, the side effects include serious and potentially life-threatening heart rhythm problems and has been given only emergency use Authorisation for the treatment of patients who have tested positive with COVID-19.
FDA said that the risks have already been downloaded in the drug labels for their approved uses. These risks can be mitigated when health care professionals closely screen and supervise these patients such in hospitals and clinics.
“We encourage health care professionals making individual patient decisions closely screen and monitor those patients to help mitigate these risks. The FDA will continue to monitor and investigate these potential risks and will communicate publicly when more information is available,” FDA Commissioner Stephen M. Hann said.
A number of reports indicates that the malaria drug has been effective during the initial phases of a person being infected by coronavirus but poses dangers to those having heart ailments.
